Aldon Smith, the former All-Pro linebacker whose electrifying start to his NFL career was cut short by legal troubles, has died at the age of 36.

The San Francisco 49ers announced his death on Saturday night. No cause of death was given, but according to reports he was dead on arrival at the Good Samaritan Hospital in San Jose, California.

“We are devastated by the sudden and tragic passing of Aldon Smith,” the 49ers said in a statement. “Aldon’s undeniable talent and sheer dominance on the field were on display from the moment he joined our organization, having recorded one of the best rookie seasons the National Football League has seen.

“Beyond his excellence as a player, Aldon will be remembered for his infectious smile that lit up every room he walked into. Our entire organization sends its deepest condolences to the Smith family and all who knew and loved Aldon.”

Smith, a linebacker and defensive end, played ten NFL seasons. He was drafted by the 49ers in 2011 out of the Missouri Tigers and earned All-Pro honours in 2012. He also played for the Oakland Raiders, Dallas Cowboys and Seattle Seahawks.

News of his death prompted an outpouring of grief from fans. “Damn. I’m 36. This guy was one hell of a player man. Rest in peace,” wrote one. Another said: “Bro this suck, I’m glad I got to witness bro play, bro was a true baller on the field.” A third added: “Bro!!!! No way man.. I was just watching his rookie highlights this is so sad.”
