Andy Robertson joins Tottenham after Liverpool exit as Reds confirm 12 departures including Mohamed Salah

Tottenham have completed the signing of Scotland captain Andy Robertson on a free transfer, hours after Liverpool confirmed the departure of 12 players including Mohamed Salah and Ibrahima Konate.

The 32-year-old left-back ends a trophy-laden eight-year spell at Anfield, where he won two Premier League titles, the Champions League, two League Cups and the FA Cup. He will become a Spurs player on 1 July after his Liverpool contract expired.

Robertson and Salah bid farewell during Liverpool's final-day draw with Brentford, with then-head coach Arne Slot bringing both off the pitch to receive separate makeshift guards of honour.

Spurs had targeted Robertson in the January transfer window, agreeing a deal with Liverpool, but the move fell through when the Reds were unable to recall Kostas Tsimikas from his loan at Roma.

"Andy is someone I've admired for a number of years and he will bring outstanding technical qualities, experience, leadership and mentality to our team," said Tottenham manager Roberto de Zerbi, who secured Premier League survival on the final day. "He is a proven winner at the highest level over a long period and is someone who can be a big player for us, both on and off the pitch."

Tottenham sporting director Johan Lange added: "His quality, character and leadership have been evident throughout a career in which he has regularly competed for – and won – major honours. Andy's professionalism and commitment will also be invaluable to the development of our squad, and he shares our ambition and determination to bring success back to the club."

Liverpool's departing players also include Konate, who leaves on a free transfer after failing to agree a new contract, and defender Rhys Williams, who departs after 15 years at the club, including a pivotal role under Jurgen Klopp during the 2020‑21 campaign. Academy prospects Oakley Cannonier – the ballboy who handed Trent Alexander-Arnold the ball for the winning goal against Barcelona in the famous 2019 Champions League semi-final – and James Balagizi are also leaving. Several younger players, including Kyle Kelly, Afolami Onanuga, Oliver O'Connor, Lucas Pitt, Ben Trueman, Matthew Wright, Prince Cisse and Keyrol Figueroa, sons of former Premier League players Djibril Cisse and Maynor Figueroa, have been offered new contracts.

New Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola said he would give opportunities to young players in pre-season. "For me right now, I think it's more than talk to the players. Some of them will be on deserved holidays, some of them will be with their national teams. I want to talk to the staff, to the people that were here every day, that know very well the players, to arrive as ready as possible to that first day of pre-season," he said.

Robertson, who has 92 caps for Scotland, will captain his country at this summer's World Cup – their first since 1998 – before linking up with De Zerbi at Spurs.
