Angus Gunn, Scotland’s first-choice goalkeeper at the World Cup, has signed for Major League Soccer side San Jose Earthquakes after being released by Nottingham Forest. The 30-year-old, capped 25 times by his country, has agreed a deal running until the end of the 2030 season.
Gunn played every minute of Scotland’s group games in the United States, keeping a clean sheet in a 1-0 win over Haiti before back-to-back defeats by Morocco and Brazil. Now he joins a side that sits second in the Western Conference, behind only Vancouver Whitecaps on goal difference, and third in the overall MLS standings.
“Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn joins San Jose Earthquakes after release by Nottingham Forest.”
“It feels incredible to join the Earthquakes,” Gunn said. “Coming off the World Cup, which was an unbelievable experience, I’m just really excited and grateful for the opportunity to come to San Jose and show the best version of myself. We're in a really good position for the play-offs, so hopefully we can focus on that with the right mentality.”
Bruce Arena’s side return to action on Wednesday, 22 July when they host Orlando City. Arena, whose team is in title contention, welcomed “a quality goalkeeper” with Premier League and World Cup experience. “We're looking forward to integrating him into the club for the second half of the season,” he said.
Gunn began his career at Manchester City and had two spells at Norwich City, also playing for Southampton and Stoke City. He joined Nottingham Forest in August after leaving Norwich but made only one substitute appearance for the Premier League side. At San Jose, he will compete for the starting spot with 32-year-old Brazilian Daniel and 34-year-old American Earl William Edwards Jr.
