In the sweltering heat of New Jersey's MetLife Stadium, a teenage prospect used the World Cup's fiercest stage as a catwalk. At 18 years and 254 days, Ayyoub Bouaddi became the second youngest player in 60 years to complete 50+ passes in a World Cup match – and the four-time champions Brazil were his canvas. The Lille anchorman, who snubbed France to pledge his international future to Morocco, displayed marvellous maturity, positioning and technical quality as he marshalled his side through an awkward second half. Midfield partner Neil El Aynaoui struggled, but Bouaddi brought his A-game, taking the fight to Brazil while holding down the fort.
That performance has only intensified the hype around a player Arsenal have been courting since 2025. Sporting director Andrea Berta made inroads with Bouaddi's representatives more than six months ago, convinced the 18-year-old was a world-class prodigy. The Gunners are not alone: PSG, Liverpool and Chelsea are also believed to be in touch. But Arsenal are actively targeting a midfielder who can operate as both a No.8 and a No.6 – a priority that puts them in pole position.
“Arsenal's pursuit of Ayyoub Bouaddi intensifies after the 18-year-old starred on World Cup debut against Brazil.”
Their pursuit comes as alternative options prove expensive. West Ham's £80m asking price for Mateus Fernandes is deemed excessive, while Newcastle will drive a hard bargain for Sandro Tonali, another name of interest. Bouaddi, who could learn from the likes of Declan Rice and Martin Zubimendi, represents an investment for both the future and the here and now – part of Arsenal's plan to build a dynasty.
Fans are demanding the signing after Bouaddi's World Cup debut, but Lille are likely to demand more than the £60m they wanted before a ball was kicked. After that eye-catching display against Brazil, don't be surprised if Les Dogues charge extra cash.
