Arsenal are poised to table a £70m bid for Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes – but the Premier League champions face a battle to convince the Magpies to sell their talisman.
The Brazil international, 28, has emerged as a priority target for the Gunners as they look to build on last season's title and Champions League final appearance. Guimaraes is known to be keen on the move, which would give him a realistic opportunity to win major trophies, and talks have accelerated in recent days.

However, Newcastle have no appetite to cash in on their captain. Sources close to the club insist they have no intention of selling this summer and that there has been no direct approach from Arsenal. It remains to be seen whether £70m will meet Newcastle's valuation, particularly given Arsenal's hardline stance: they will not overpay for the midfielder.
That stance cost them Morgan Rogers. Arsenal valued the Aston Villa winger at £80m, but refused to go higher, opening the door for Chelsea to pay £117m. The Gunners have since shifted focus to Guimaraes, but their willingness to walk away from a deal if the price exceeds their maximum valuation could see history repeat itself.
While the midfield pursuit dominates, Arsenal are also active in defence. They have enquired about Villa's Ezri Konsa, their first-choice defensive target, and retain an interest in Como's Jacobo Ramon, though contractual clauses make that deal difficult. Atletico Madrid's Julian Alvarez remains a dream attacking target, but the cost – potentially exceeding the British record £125m – and the player's preference for Barcelona pose significant obstacles. Paris St-Germain's Bradley Barcola has also been explored.
For now, all eyes are on the Guimaraes saga. Arsenal have the funds and the player's desire, but Newcastle's resistance and the Gunners' own discipline in the market mean this transfer hangs in the balance.
