Arsenal are braced for a defensive crisis after William Saliba reported for assessment with a back injury that could require surgery – while the club were simultaneously dealt a transfer blow as Chelsea hijacked their move for Morgan Rogers.
Saliba, 25, has been carrying a back problem for several weeks and aggravated it during France’s World Cup semi-final defeat by Spain, forced off after just 30 minutes. The centre-back flew back to London where Arsenal’s medical team will consider surgery, though an operation would likely mean a long-term lay-off.

“I’ve had some minor niggles for several months,” Saliba said earlier in the tournament. “I’ve been gritting my teeth because there was the Champions League and the Premier League. The World Cup comes round only once every four years, so you’ve got to grit your teeth.”
He missed France’s final group game against Norway before returning for the knockout stage. France still face England in the third-place play-off on Saturday.
Last season, Saliba made 50 appearances in all competitions as Arsenal ended a 22-year wait to win the Premier League and reached the Champions League final. His potential absence would leave a gaping hole in Mikel Arteta’s defence.
The injury news comes as Arsenal also missed out on Morgan Rogers, a clear transfer target for Arteta. A shock Chelsea hijack and the club’s World Cup injury woes have left the Gunners reeling, according to reports.
