Arsenal’s summer transfer window frustration crystallised when they watched Morgan Rogers become the most expensive British footballer of all time – for a club that wasn’t them. Chelsea agreed a £117m package for the left attacker, swooping in after Arsenal’s valuation of around £80m fell short. The Gunners had been favourites, but the gap proved unbridgeable.
That pattern has repeated: Arsenal’s £70m offer for Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes is expected to be rejected out of hand. The Brazilian turns 29 later this year, and Newcastle have little appetite to sell. Arsenal must decide whether to go much higher.

The problem, as the club sees it, is that they are trying to act rationally in a market now “completely bereft of sanity”. Transfer fees have soared into obscene territory. The blockbuster sums paid for Rogers and for Elliot Anderson (£116m) have become benchmarks, not breaking points.
Arsenal have so far added only Christos Tzolis for £34m from Club Brugge and free agent Illan Meslier. Strengthening a title-winning side was always going to be difficult. But if they are to level up, they may have little choice but to exceed their valuations.
Other targets – Bradley Barcola, Yan Diomande, Julian Alvarez – are unlikely to move for less than a figure in the £100m ballpark. The ripple effects of other deals are already being felt.
With over a month of the window remaining, Premier League clubs are on track to eclipse last year’s record spend of £3bn. For Arsenal, the question is whether they can find a ceiling-raiser without joining the madness.
