Aston Villa target Estupinan as transfer gossip swirls

Aston Villa have begun assessing a move for AC Milan left-back Pervis Estupinan, with the 28-year-old Ecuador international emerging as a potential target. The Premier League side are also among a clutch of clubs – including Leeds United, Sunderland, Fulham and Brighton – tracking Barcelona winger Roony Bardghji, the 20-year-old Sweden international.

Chelsea, meanwhile, are preparing an offer worth up to £21m for Rayo Vallecano left-back Pep Chavarria, a 28-year-old Spaniard. Inter Milan have abandoned their pursuit of Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah after balking at the £30m asking price, though Como retain an interest in the 27-year-old England centre-back.

Newcastle have moved to quash any suggestion that Bruno Guimaraes might leave, with the club viewing the 28-year-old Brazil midfielder as not for sale despite rumours that Arsenal believed they could land him for £50m. Roma have seen a €40m offer for Atletico Madrid defender Manu Kone rejected; the 25-year-old France international also interests Manchester United and Liverpool.

Further afield, Hull City and Southampton are tracking Werder Bremen forward Justin Nijnmah, 25, while Benfica have raised the asking price for winger Thomas Schjelderup to £43m after his World Cup performances for Norway, with Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham all monitoring the 22-year-old. Sporting, Wolves and Southampton have all had approaches for Tottenham striker Will Lankshear turned down – the 21-year-old England youth international spent last season on loan at Oxford United.

Barcelona are open to selling Spain midfielder Ferran Torres, 26, in order to avoid triggering a £7m payment to his former club Manchester City should his contract be extended. The flurry of activity underscores a late-August market still thick with possibility – and plenty of clubs yet to finalise their squads before the window slams shut.
