Aston Villa have agreed a loan deal for Chelsea winger Alejandro Garnacho — a move one critic has branded 'a nightmare' — just days after selling Morgan Rogers to Chelsea for a British-record £117m.
The 22-year-old Argentina international has already completed a medical in Birmingham and pre-agreed a four-year contract if the loan becomes permanent at the end of the 2026-27 season. The obligation-to-buy clause, whose terms have not been disclosed, is expected to be triggered by appearances. Chelsea believe the conditions are easily reachable, allowing them to achieve their original £43m valuation.
“Aston Villa agree loan for Chelsea winger Garnacho after selling Rogers for £117m, with critics calling it a 'nightmare'.”
Garnacho's departure from Stamford Bridge follows Chelsea's stunning capture of Rogers on Monday, a deal sealed in under 48 hours after England's World Cup semi-final defeat. The move made Rogers the most expensive British player in history.
Villa's player sales this summer total nearly £200m, with Youri Tielemans, Donyell Malen, Enzo Barrenechea and Lewis Dobbin also leaving. Garnacho becomes Villa's fourth signing after Johan Manzambi, Joao Gomes and Modou Keba Cisse.
But the switch from Rogers to Garnacho has drawn sharp criticism. Mirror chief sports writer Jeremy Cross wrote: 'Aston Villa are about to swing violently from the sublime to the ridiculous… Unai Emery has invited a nightmare to his own doorstep.' Cross noted Garnacho failed to make Argentina's World Cup squad due to attitude concerns, with Lionel Messi raising worries about his disruptiveness.
Garnacho, who joined Chelsea from Manchester United for £40m last September, managed just one Premier League goal in 43 appearances across all competitions (eight goals, four assists). He started only nine league matches under Liam Rosenior and interim boss Calum McFarlane, and was criticised for a perceived lack of work-rate.
Meanwhile, Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson is reportedly open to a move to Villa Park as the Garnacho deal nears completion, according to the Standard. Villa are rebuilding after losing key players, but Emery faces questions over whether Garnacho can recapture the form that once made him a promising talent.
