BBC renews hit comedy Ludwig for third series before second has aired

The BBC has announced a third series of its award-winning comedy-drama Ludwig, even before the second series has aired — a rare vote of confidence that underscores the show’s extraordinary success. The cryptic detective series, starring David Mitchell as the introverted puzzle designer John “Ludwig” Taylor, became the broadcaster’s biggest scripted series since 2024 after its debut attracted more than 9.5 million viewers within 28 days, marking the largest comedy launch episode since at least 2018.

Mitchell’s character, a reclusive puzzle creator, stepped into the shoes of his missing identical twin brother, a detective chief inspector, in the first series. The second, due later this year, will see John take on a new role as a crime scene consultant for the Cambridge Police Authority. His twin, James, remains missing, and John has been banned from using any police resources to find him — but he will not stop, and neither will Lucy Betts-Taylor, the wife of his missing brother, played by Anna Maxwell Martin. Joining the cast for the upcoming instalment are Fleabag’s Sian Clifford and Scottish actor Mark Bonnar as regulars. The first series featured guest appearances from Sir Derek Jacobi, Felicity Kendal, Rose Ayling-Ellis, Hammed Animashaun, Ralph Ineson and Karl Pilkington.

Created and written by Mark Brotherhood, Ludwig is produced by Big Talk Studios, part of ITV Studios, in association with That Mitchell and Webb Company. The renewal for a third series ahead of the second’s air date reflects rare confidence from the BBC and co-producer ZDF. Kenton Allen, executive producer and chief executive at Big Talk Studios, said: “Ludwig has become one of those rare shows that genuinely cuts through — critically, commercially and internationally. We’re hugely grateful to the BBC, ZDF and ITV Studios for the confidence they’ve shown in green-lighting a third season ahead of the launch of series two. What Mark Brotherhood has created is brilliantly original, hugely entertaining and deceptively distinctive.”

Mitchell, best known for Peep Show, said: “I am delighted that Ludwig will be returning to solve more of Brotherhood’s brilliant mysteries. I can’t wait to get started and have renewed the subscription on my denouement-learning app.” Fans now face an unusual wait: a second series still to come, and already the promise of a third — if the show can sustain the momentum that made it a phenomenon.
