A record number of people have been flocking to BBC Sport’s website and app during the World Cup, with huge numbers across live pages, articles and videos – and the broadcaster says it is already preparing for the tournament’s end by shifting focus to the new club football season.
“We’re delighted to see you all enjoying our coverage of the World Cup – as well as Wimbledon, Formula 1, cricket, and much more – across all of our platforms,” the BBC said, noting that more users than ever are spending the summer with its sports output.
“Record numbers of users flock to BBC Sport's World Cup coverage; new features and pre-season club focus planned post-tournament.”
To match the quality of the action on the pitch, BBC Sport has introduced several new features in recent months, including a Shorts tab on the app, a new Predictor game, a Fifa World Cup 3D Experience, and the ‘as it stands’ projection for the last 32. Football quizzes, such as the Who Am I? format, and tested live comments in match pages have also been added.
“All of these innovations are based on your feedback,” the BBC said, explaining that it constantly monitors data and speaks to audiences to understand how they use the website and app.
When the World Cup ends, regardless of the winner, the broadcaster promises “loads of great content every day” as it builds towards the 2026-27 season. Coverage will include the tournament fallout and reaction, before quickly switching to club football – pre-season coverage, transfer gossip, and stories.
BBC Sport and teams across BBC Nations and Regions cover every club in the Premier League, WSL and EFL, as well as sides in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Dedicated club reporters will travel to bring behind-the-scenes insights from pre-season tours. Selected pre-season matches will have live pages, and in-depth features will give the latest updates before the new campaign.
Senior football correspondent Sami Mokbel will be breaking the big transfer stories on the website and app, alongside a daily transfer gossip column wrapping up rumours from across the football world. For fans of the World Cup Predictor, a brand new weekly Predictor game will launch immediately after the tournament, allowing users to predict the outcomes of five fixtures a week and build streaks.
Harry Kane, Erling Haaland and Jude Bellingham – all of whom have shone at the World Cup – will continue to feature prominently across BBC Sport in the coming season, as the broadcaster aims to keep its record audience engaged long after the final whistle.
