Jude Bellingham pounced on a goalkeeping error to score his second goal of the game in extra time, sending England into the World Cup semi-finals with a 2-1 victory over Norway in Miami. The Real Madrid star, described as 'man of all the moments', struck the winner after Orjan Håskjold Nyland, Norway's hero against Brazil in the previous round, failed to hold a routine shot, allowing Bellingham to tap in.
Norway had taken the lead in the first half through Andreas Schjelderup, whose shot from distance may or may not have been intended as a cross, but it gave them a 1-0 advantage. England struggled to create clear chances until Bellingham equalised before half-time, taking Anthony Gordon's pass, driving past two defenders and finding the bottom corner.
“Jude Bellingham scores twice, including extra-time winner, as England beat Norway 2-1 to reach World Cup semi-finals.”
The second half saw Norway have a second goal ruled out by VAR after Torbjørn Heggem thought he had scored, but the goal was disallowed, with a new rule being applied for the first time, according to reports. England were perhaps fortunate to reach extra time as Norway also hit the bar through Kristoffer Ajer.
In extra time, Bellingham made it 2-1 before England thought they had a penalty when Djed Spence went down, but referee Clément Turpin overturned his initial decision after VAR intervention. It did not matter, as England held on for victory.
England will now face Argentina in the semi-final on Wednesday 15 July, after the reigning champions beat Switzerland 3-1 in Kansas City. Norway's Erling Haaland, who had a fierce battle with clubmate Marc Guéhi, was substituted in extra time looking devastated as his tournament ended.
