Bernardo Silva has signed for Real Madrid, linking up once again with manager Jose Mourinho, who lured the Portugal midfielder to the Bernabeu on a free transfer. Silva, 31, left Manchester City at the end of a trophy-laden nine-year spell and has agreed a two-year deal, becoming Real’s second summer arrival after defender Marc Cucurella joined from Chelsea for £52m.
Mourinho’s own return to Real Madrid – he left Benfica to take the reins – triggered a chain of managerial moves across Europe. Benfica, needing a replacement, targeted Fulham’s Marco Silva, who had been shortlisted by Chelsea. Despite Fulham offering a record contract to keep their manager of five years, Silva accepted the Benfica job, with super-agent Jorge Mendes brokering both appointments.
“Bernardo Silva joins Real Madrid on a free, reuniting with Jose Mourinho as a managerial domino effect brings Alvaro Arbeloa to Fulham.”
That left Fulham searching for Silva’s successor. The club are now in advanced talks with Alvaro Arbeloa, the former Liverpool and Real Madrid defender who had been serving as Benfica’s interim boss after Mourinho’s departure. Tony Khan, Fulham’s director, revealed two leading candidates are under consideration, with Arbeloa understood to be the frontrunner. Arbeloa, 41, represented by agent Oscar Ribot, spent two years at Liverpool as a player before a seven-year spell at Real Madrid and earned 56 caps for Spain.
The managerial upheaval is part of a wider shake-up in English football. Ten Premier League clubs will begin the new season with new managers, including Chelsea, Manchester City, and Manchester United. Meanwhile, Real Madrid have also extended defender Antonio Rudiger’s contract until 2027 and are targeting departing Inter Milan defender Denzel Dumfries, while France defender Ibrahima Konate is set to join after leaving Liverpool. As for Fulham, the race to replace Marco Silva continues, with Arbeloa in pole position to take the reins at Craven Cottage.
