Bernardo Silva joins Real Madrid as Mourinho return triggers managerial merry-go-round

Bernardo Silva has joined Real Madrid on a two-year deal, reuniting with manager Jose Mourinho and bringing an end to a trophy-laden nine-year spell at Manchester City. The 31-year-old midfielder, who scored 76 goals and made 77 assists in 451 appearances for City, arrived on a free transfer — Real’s second signing of the summer after Marc Cucurella joined from Chelsea for £52m.

Silva’s arrival is the first piece in a dizzying managerial puzzle that has seen Mourinho leave Benfica to return to the Santiago Bernabeu, prised away by recently re-elected Real president Florentino Perez. That move left Benfica searching for a new manager, with interim boss Alvaro Arbeloa suddenly without a role. Enter Marco Silva, whose future at Fulham had already been in doubt after being shortlisted by Chelsea. Benfica secured their man despite Fulham offering a record contract to keep their manager of five years, with super-agent Jorge Mendes brokering deals for both moves.

Arbeloa, represented by agent Oscar Ribot, is now in advanced talks to join Fulham. The former Liverpool defender — who won 56 caps for Spain and was part of the great side that won two European Championships and the World Cup between 2008 and 2012 — is best known in England for his two-year spell at Anfield before returning to Real Madrid for seven years and finishing his career with a single season at West Ham. Mourinho signed Arbeloa from Liverpool in the same summer he brought Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka to Real Madrid.

With Marco Silva heading to Benfica, Fulham’s search for a successor is intensifying. Tony Khan, the club’s vice-chairman, has revealed that two names in particular are standing out to the board as the hunt continues. The Cottagers are among 10 Premier League clubs who will start next season with a new manager or one appointed late last season, underscoring a chaotic period in the top flight.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid finished eight points behind La Liga champions Barcelona last season and were knocked out in the Champions League quarter-finals. They are also targeting departing Inter Milan defender Denzel Dumfries, while France defender Ibrahima Konate is set to join after leaving Liverpool. Defender Antonio Rudiger this week signed a contract extension with Real until 2027. Silva, currently at the World Cup with Portugal, is expected to play a pivotal role for his country as Real looks to rebuild under Mourinho.
