Best World Cup stadium? BBC Sport experts have their say

The 2026 World Cup, spread across 16 cities in three nations, has delivered a string of memorable venues — but for BBC Sport reporters, one stadium stands above the rest.

Seattle Stadium, better known as Lumen Field, ticks the most boxes as the perfect stadium experience, according to reporters who have toured the tournament. Situated in the city's downtown, the ground offers what one described as one of the best backdrops in football: on one side, the skyscrapers of Seattle; on the other, the snow-capped peak of Mount Rainier rising above the stands.

BBC Sport reporters name Seattle Stadium as the best venue at the 2026 World Cup, praising its downtown location, Mount Rainier backdrop and shaking atmosphere.

The atmosphere, they say, is amplified by the curved roof on the two lengthwise stands, causing crowd cheers to bounce back towards the pitch — and making the stadium physically shake.

Not every venue has won such praise. Boston Stadium, home to the New England Patriots, boasts a fantastic view from every seat in its steeply banked stands — useful for tactical analysis from the media gantry, though even Erling Haaland would look like an ant from that height. The giant bowl holds in the atmosphere well, but getting in is hampered by what one reporter called the most inadequate signage they had ever come across at a World Cup. Getting to the ground from Boston takes an eternity, and while helpful staff lessen the blow, they reportedly do not really know their way around either.

Then there is the Azteca Stadium in Mexico, where the tournament opened. It has football history oozing out of every crevice — from Carlos Alberto's famous fourth Brazilian goal in the 1970 final to Diego Maradona's heroics for Argentina in 1986. The pitch still has that shimmering quality reporters remember from watching on TV all those years ago. Backed by passionate Mexicans, the cascade of sombreros at the opening match left one reporter certain there will be no better stage at this World Cup.

With the final set for 19 July at New York New Jersey Stadium, the debate over the tournament's best venue may continue — but for now, Seattle's blend of city skyline, mountain peak and shaking stands has set a high bar.
