The British Heart Foundation (BHF) has confirmed the locations of the first 87 shops it plans to close permanently, with a further 63 stores at risk in a second wave as the charity battles rising costs and falling footfall.
The closures are the first phase of a two-year restructuring that will see 150 of the organisation’s 640 outlets shut down by March 2028 — 90 by March 2027 and the remaining 60 by the end of that period. The charity, which currently operates 652 stores across the UK, said a review found some shops are “no longer financially sustainable” due to an “exceptionally challenging trading environment”.

“Like most retailers, we are facing an exceptionally challenging trading environment,” said Dr Charmaine Griffiths, BHF’s chief executive. “Our shops mean so much to our colleagues, brilliant volunteers and communities across the UK. They are places where people come together to donate, shop and volunteer, helping to make a real difference to lives affected by cardiovascular disease.”
The charity emphasised that its overall financial position remains healthy, with strong performance in fundraising and legacy income, but acknowledged the need for change. “We must act now to ensure a sustainable future for BHF retail,” added Allison Swaine-Hughes, the group’s chief commercial officer. “Change is essential so we can continue to serve communities across the UK and raise the funds that power our lifesaving research.”
Affected stores span the country from Salford and Eccles to Harlow and Camden, with six closures in Wales. Staff will be supported through the process, with redeployment opportunities offered where possible, while volunteers are expected to be placed in neighbouring shops or other roles within the charity.
The news comes during a difficult period for the UK high street, with fashion outlet Leading Labels, Morrisons, Quiz Clothing and accessories chain Radley all announcing closures in recent months. Franco Manca, The Real Greek, Beefeater and Brewers Fayre have also shut sites.
Customers can continue to donate and shop as normal at the affected stores until they close. The remaining 63 at-risk stores have yet to be finalised, with the second wave of closures expected to be announced in the coming months.
