Bonnie Tyler, the 1980s pop legend whose husky voice powered the anthems Total Eclipse of the Heart and Holding Out for a Hero, has died at the age of 75. Her family said she passed away unexpectedly at the hospital in Portugal where she had been treated since emergency surgery in May.

Sir Keir Starmer led tributes, calling her “one of Britain’s greatest recording artists”. The prime minister’s words joined a chorus of fans and musicians mourning the loss of a star whose songs defined a generation.

But few knew that Tyler’s biggest hit was almost a ghost story. In a 2023 interview with The Guardian, she revealed that Total Eclipse of the Heart was originally written for a prospective musical version of Nosferatu. The song’s composer, Jim Steinman – best known for producing Meat Loaf – had started it for the vampire project years earlier but never finished it.

Tyler, eager to move from country rock to rock, had hoped to work with Steinman. “Fortunately for me, Jim really loved my voice,” she recalled. When he played her the unfinished track, she said: “I understood immediately what an incredible song it was. I poured my heart out singing it.”

Steinman told her that around the time they were recording, Meat Loaf had lost his voice. After the song became a hit, Meat Loaf would joke: “Dang. That song should have been mine!”

The song’s dramatic lyrics – “Together we can take it to the end of the line / Your love is like a shadow on me all of the time” – have resonated for more than 40 years, earning a place in karaoke bars and film soundtracks alike.

Tyler’s family have not released further details about her death, but the outpouring of tributes underlines her enduring legacy. A star who turned a Nosferatu-inspired ballad into one of the most unforgettable songs of the 1980s has fallen silent.
