Brighton break club record to sign Luka Vuskovic from Tottenham for £46m

Brighton have completed the signing of Croatia defender Luka Vuskovic from Tottenham for a club record £46m, with the deal potentially rising to £50m in add-ons. The 19-year-old has signed a five-year contract, with an option for an additional year, and becomes the most expensive signing in Brighton’s history.

The move comes after the Seagulls had two bids rejected last month, but they eventually agreed a fee that could surpass the £50m mark. Vuskovic joins Brighton as a direct replacement for Netherlands centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke, who has moved in the opposite direction to Tottenham in a £52m deal.

Vuskovic first joined Tottenham in 2025 from Hajduk Split, having agreed a pre-contract two years earlier. He spent last season on loan at Hamburg, making 30 appearances and scoring six goals in the Bundesliga, where he was named Rookie of the Season and earned a spot in the league's Team of the Year.

Brighton head coach Fabian Hurzeler said the club has tracked Vuskovic’s progress closely. “Last season he demonstrated he can play at a very high level and we want to help him build on that within our environment,” Hurzeler said. “There’s been a lot of external noise about Luka joining us, but he is still a young guy who will need time to adjust to the demands of playing for Brighton and the Premier League. We are confident that he will take this in his stride though.”

Born in Split, Vuskovic came through the academy at Hajduk, becoming the youngest player to feature in Croatia’s top flight at 16 and later Hajduk’s youngest goalscorer. He has six senior caps for Croatia and scored his first international goal, making his World Cup debut against England in the group stages last month.

Brighton begin their Premier League season at home to Aston Villa on Sunday, 23 August at 14:00 BST, with Vuskovic likely to be introduced to the Amex Stadium crowd.
