'Bruno's magic hat' no more? Guimaraes pushes for Arsenal exit as Newcastle face losing captain

Inside his home, Bruno Guimaraes keeps a top hat embroidered with the words 'Bruno's magic hat' – a keepsake from the chant Newcastle fans devised after his arrival from Lyon in 2022. The song boasts that he 'could have signed for Arsenal' but instead chose 'the famous black and white'. Now, four and a half years on, the Brazilian has intimated his wish is to move to the red half of north London. Arsenal are preparing their first bid, and Newcastle's captain is pushing for the transfer.

Guimaraes joined a club fighting relegation in January 2022, declaring at his unveiling that Newcastle could become a bigger club. He has been the team's beating heart: when he has played, Newcastle's win percentage is 50.7%, points per game 1.7, and average goals for 1.9; without him, those numbers plummet to 12.5%, 0.7 and 0.8 respectively. Only two of 16 Premier League games without him have been won.

But this summer, rebuilding was always on the cards. Fresh from a settlement with Uefa, Newcastle have needed to sell to reinvest. In the past 12 months, Sandro Tonali left for Tottenham in a deal worth up to £100m, Anthony Gordon joined Barcelona for £69.3m, and Alexander Isak also departed. The sales created headroom within financial rules, but losing their captain would test the club's direction.

There is a cold argument that it may be the right time to cash in on Guimaraes, who turns 29 in November. Yet for season ticket holder Liam Phillips, the midfielder's departure would cut deeper. 'I would be absolutely devastated,' he said. 'His departure would be very symbolic in terms of what it says about the trajectory of the project. Newcastle have lost Isak, Gordon and Tonali in the last 12 months. To lose Bruno would be very alarming.'

A vision was set out to Guimaraes when he joined. Now, as Arsenal prepare their formal approach, the question is whether Newcastle can afford to lose the man who made the magic – or whether the magic has already run its course.
