Bruno Guimarães stood before the media in January 2022 and made a vow that raised eyebrows across English football. “We’re going to be a big power in world football,” he declared, after joining Newcastle United from Lyon for £35m. At the time, Newcastle were 19th in the Premier League, fighting for survival. The club’s hierarchy had told him of ambitions to reach the Champions League and even win it – while relegation loomed. Four years on, Eddie Howe’s side have not only pulled away from danger but qualified for the Champions League twice in three seasons and ended a 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy by lifting the EFL Cup in 2025. Yet the project has reached a crossroads. Alexander Isak pushed for a move to Liverpool last summer and got his wish. Anthony Gordon followed him out in May this year, joining Barcelona. Tottenham Hotspur have tested Newcastle’s resolve with an opening bid of about £80m for Sandro Tonali. And now Arsenal are poised to make an offer for Guimarães, Newcastle’s captain and talisman. The Gunners have not yet made an approach, but the London club are clearly readying a bid. For Newcastle, the timing is awkward. Guimarães turns 29 in November, and outsiders may argue that now is the moment to sell. But Newcastle are adamant he is not for sale. His importance to the team is stark: Howe’s side failed to win any of the 12 league fixtures Guimarães missed between August 2022 and February 2026. At the World Cup, he went top of the assists leaderboard after teeing up Gabriel Martinelli’s late winner against Japan – his fourth assist in four games at the highest level. “He’s the most important player in the team,” said former Newcastle team-mate Emil Krafth, who spent four and a half years alongside the midfielder. “He manages the game so well, both physically and technically. There’s a lot of rumours surrounding him, which is not surprising because he’s had a good World Cup and a great season.” Even staff behind the scenes at Newcastle describe him as “inspirational”. Guimarães is now a summer transfer target for Mikel Arteta, with a new asking price reportedly emerging. The question is whether he can resist the lure of Arsenal – and whether Newcastle can convince him, for a second time, that their project is still worth staying for.
