Canada forced away from home for first World Cup knockout after Switzerland defeat; Mexico maintain perfect record

Canada will make World Cup history as the first host nation ever to play a match away from home, after a 2-1 defeat to Switzerland in Vancouver on Wednesday condemned them to second place in Group B. The loss means the Canadians cannot return to BC Place for the round of 32; instead, their first-ever knockout fixture will take place at a neutral venue in Los Angeles, handing President Donald Trump an unwelcome bragging right.

Canada head coach Jesse Marsch made no secret of his frustration, saying: "I've been through World Cups and had big moments in my career, and when you get one big win, building on that is so important. So I'm disappointed we weren't able to get a win or draw to keep us here [in Vancouver]. But I am grateful to the country and the stadium for the energy today. It's been awesome, and that's the disappointment because we just want to continue the energy we had."

While Canada's home games have proved a resounding triumph, with Prime Minister Mark Carney a familiar face in the stands, the logistical reality of the multi-nation tournament always placed the United States at its centre. Despite breathtaking atmospheres in both Canada and Mexico, the lion's share of matches are being staged in the US, forcing the Canadians to travel south for their next fixture.

Meanwhile, Mexico maintained their 100% winning record in the group phase, scoring three second-half goals to eliminate the Czech Republic from the World Cup. The victory ensured the Mexicans finish the group stage with maximum points and advance to the knockout rounds, while their opponents are sent home.
