Cape Verde stun Uruguay as France vs Iraq faces storm threat

Cape Verde’s Kevin Pina scored a stunning opening goal against Uruguay in their Group H match at the 2026 World Cup, a moment that left fans gasping. But even as the tournament minnows celebrated, another storm — quite literally — was brewing 7,000 miles away in Philadelphia.

France are set to face Iraq in their second Group I match at Lincoln Financial Field on a night when severe storms are forecast to hit the area. Under FIFA rules, play must be interrupted and delayed if lightning strikes within eight miles of the stadium. In that scenario, fans are shifted from the stands into the concourse or to an emergency shelter area.

“They’ll start to evacuate the stadium to the main concourse and seek emergency shelter,” said Lauren Lambrugo, chief operating officer of Philadelphia Soccer 2026. “And then it has to wait 30 minutes prior to them bringing everybody back on the field.”

Lambrugo was more confident when asked about the prospect of outright postponement. “They will make sure that the match is broadcast and played tomorrow,” she said, adding that the final call on weather-related issues rests with “FIFA and the (Philadelphia) Eagles team.”

No World Cup matches this tournament have been delayed by weather so far, but the threat is real. England’s friendly with Costa Rica in Orlando, Florida, was delayed by an hour as a result of lightning strikes, a harbinger of what might come.

Fans watching France and Iraq have been urged to keep abreast of weather warnings. Michael DelBene, executive producer of the FIFA Fan Festival, said: “We’ve been very lucky, this past week has been wonderful. We encourage people to come out even if it’s raining. In the event of dangerous weather, high winds or lightning or anything like that, we will evacuate the site.”

For Kylian Mbappe and his teammates, the goal will be to keep causing a stir on the pitch — but first, they may need to wait out a storm.
