Chelsea have smashed the British transfer record, paying Aston Villa £117m for Morgan Rogers in a deal that signals Xabi Alonso's intent to reshape his squad. The 24-year-old, described by Alonso as “flexible” and capable of playing across the forward line, becomes the most expensive signing in English football history.
The move triggered a chain of transfers across the Premier League. Villa, flush with the record fee, immediately reinvested, bringing in Johan Manzambi from Freiburg for £51m and João Gomes from Wolves for £34m. They also sanctioned the departures of Youri Tielemans to Manchester United (£35m) and Donyell Malen to Roma (£21.6m). Arsenal, who had also pursued Rogers, moved to strengthen out wide instead, signing Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge for £34m after the departure of Leandro Trossard to Besiktas for £15.3m. The Gunners also added Piero Hincapié from Bayer Leverkusen for £45m.

Chelsea’s spending did not stop with Rogers. Marco Palestra joined for £43m, and Maxence Lacroix completed a medical last week ahead of his arrival. Yet defensive concerns remain: Chelsea have conceded 158 Premier League goals over the past three campaigns, and have already lost Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid for £52m. Tosin Adarabioyo and Benoit Badiashile could also leave this summer.
To shore up the backline, Alonso is targeting John Stones, the six-time Premier League winner who left Manchester City at the end of his contract, and Pep Chavarria of Rayo Vallecano. Talks have begun for Chavarria, while Valentin Barco is still expected to join. The club also faces a battle to keep Alex Scott, who has turned down a new contract at Bournemouth and is wanted by Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal.
Elsewhere, Bournemouth signed Álvaro Rodríguez from Elche for £21.4m and sold Luis Sinisterra to Cruzeiro for £5.2m, while Marcos Senesi joined Tottenham on a free. The English transfer record has been smashed, with Elliot Anderson also on the move this summer, as clubs scramble to finalise their business before the window closes.
