Chelsea are in talks to sign Brentford midfielder Jordan Henderson and Brighton striker Danny Welbeck, a move that signals a sharp pivot from the club’s recent policy of investing in younger players. The two veterans – who have made a combined 863 Premier League appearances – are being pursued as manager Xabi Alonso seeks to add experience to a squad that finished outside European qualification last season.
Henderson, 36, has a year left on his Brentford contract and the Bees are willing to let him leave on a free transfer after he made 34 appearances for them last season. The former Liverpool captain broke his arm while celebrating England’s World Cup last-16 win over Mexico. Welbeck, 35, scored 13 league goals for Brighton last season – a career high – and signed a 12-month contract extension in March that runs until 2027. Brighton are prepared to sell for the right price, with Chelsea optimistic a deal can be concluded.

The pursuit marks a direct response to influential owner Behdad Eghbali’s admission in April that the club’s model of signing young talents needed a “tweak”. The Blues have already spent a club-record £117m on attacking midfielder Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa this week, and are close to completing a £52m move for Crystal Palace centre-back Maxence Lacroix. Chelsea are also in talks to hire Aston Villa’s highly rated set-piece coach Austin MacPhee, 46, who has helped Villa score more set-piece goals than any team in Europe’s top five leagues in 2023-24. MacPhee, who combined his role with coaching Portugal’s national team, would fill a vacancy left by Bernardo Cueva moving into a behind-the-scenes role.
Chelsea’s interest in Welbeck and Henderson raises questions about the futures of several current forwards. Joao Pedro, who scored 15 league goals in his debut Chelsea season, remains the club’s first-choice striker. But Liam Delap – a £30m signing from Ipswich a year ago – is increasingly expected to leave after struggling to establish himself. Nicolas Jackson, who returned from a loan at Bayern Munich, is open to departing amid interest from Aston Villa. Welbeck’s arrival would reunite him with Joao Pedro, who also moved from Brighton to Chelsea last summer, adding to the pipeline of players switching between the two clubs that includes Robert Sánchez and Moisés Caicedo.
Whether the shift towards experience can restore Chelsea to the top of the Premier League remains to be seen – but the club’s recruitment drive under Alonso is unmistakably taking a new direction.
