Jordan Henderson is on the verge of a shock move to Chelsea after agreeing terms to leave Brentford on a free transfer, with the Blues leading a queue of Premier League suitors for the 36-year-old.
The former Liverpool captain broke his arm during England's World Cup celebrations following their last-16 win against Mexico and remained with the squad in North America for the rest of the tournament, a key dressing-room figure. His leadership and experience are part of why Xabi Alonso wants to bring him to Stamford Bridge, according to The Athletic.
“Chelsea are leading contenders to sign Jordan Henderson on a free transfer from Brentford.”
Chelsea's interest comes after they opened talks with Brighton to sign 35-year-old Danny Welbeck, further proof of a change in transfer policy since Alonso was appointed. Last month, the Blues bid £8m for Granit Xhaka after the Sunderland captain signalled he would reunite with Alonso, but Sunderland flatly rejected the offer. Henderson is seen as an alternative, with Alonso wanting an experienced head in midfield, while he also gets on well with Chelsea's new £117m signing, Morgan Rogers.
Henderson only joined Brentford a year ago from Ajax, having previously played for Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq after leaving Liverpool in July 2023. But his impact off the pitch is valued, too. After England's 6-4 win over France in the World Cup third-place play-off, boss Thomas Tuchel revealed Henderson had given a powerful pre-match speech.
"Jordan Henderson gave a very impressive speech today in the hotel to put this in the right frame and put everyone in the right mindset," Tuchel explained. "That was very emotional and very, very impressive to put this game into perspective."
For Alonso, a manager building a side around both youth and veteran nous, Henderson represents a short-term fix with long-term influence — if Chelsea can beat the competition to his signature.
