Chelsea have agreed a £52m deal to sign Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix, with the France international set for a medical in the next 24 hours before signing a contract until 2032. The move comes as the Blues also offloaded winger Alejandro Garnacho to Aston Villa on a loan that becomes permanent if certain criteria are met – a deal Chelsea believe will secure their £43m valuation.
Lacroix, 26, made 55 appearances last season as Palace won the Uefa Conference League – their first major European trophy – and also featured in their Community Shield victory over Liverpool. The centre-back, signed from Wolfsburg in 2024 for £15.5m plus £2.6m in add-ons, has established himself as one of the Premier League's most consistent defenders. Last season he was the only player to record at least 50 tackles (60), 200 duels won (204) and 250 clearances (252). At 6ft 4in and with a top speed of 35.81km/h, he also ranked among the five fastest centre-backs in the league and boasted the best success rate in one-on-one defensive situations (50.5%).

His arrival follows Chelsea's record £117m signing of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa on Tuesday – a fee that helped trigger a flurry of activity. Villa, who have made nearly £200m in player sales this summer including Rogers, Youri Tielemans, Donyell Malen, Enzo Barrenechea and Lewis Dobbin, moved quickly to replace Rogers by taking Garnacho on loan. The 22-year-old Argentine, who joined Chelsea from Manchester United last September for £40m, scored eight goals and registered four assists in 43 games last season but managed only one Premier League goal. Manchester United are due 10% of any future transfer fee.
Villa head coach Unai Emery said he was “delighted” with the signing. “He is so talented, young and he showed us his wish to help our project. We are really happy,” he added. Garnacho, who also interested Roma, becomes Villa's fourth signing of the window after Johan Manzambi, Joao Gomes and Modou Keba Cisse. With the loan designed to become permanent if appearance targets are met, Emery has secured a pacy winger while managing financial fair play constraints.
For Chelsea, the Lacroix deal adds a tactically versatile defender comfortable in both a back four and a back three – offering head coach Xabi Alonso options as the Blues continue to reshape their squad. The departure of Garnacho, along with the arrivals of Rogers and Sporting winger Geovany Quenda, signals a clear shift in Chelsea's attacking ranks.
