Morgan Rogers has completed a British record £117m move to Chelsea from Aston Villa, with the 23-year-old England midfielder signing a seven-year contract at Stamford Bridge. The deal, agreed on Saturday, represents a dramatic hijack of Arsenal, who had been in talks with the player and were considered favourites.
Rogers returned from the United States after featuring for England at the World Cup, where he started in the 2-1 semi-final defeat to Argentina and the 6-4 bronze-medal win over France. He underwent a medical in London on Monday before being unveiled by the club.

“I'm joining the biggest club in London,” Rogers said in his announcement video. “The way the club wants to go and how it wants to move forward is something I want to be a part of. I think it was just perfect for me. I just can't wait to get going.”
The move came as a genuine shock, with Chelsea having tracked Rogers for more than two years. After England's World Cup exit last Wednesday, the club moved swiftly: sporting directors, head coach Xabi Alonso, and co-owner Behdad Eghbali combined to secure the deal within 48 hours. Chelsea captain Reece James made the case from within the England camp, while Cole Palmer, described by Rogers as “one of my best friends in life”, was also aware of developments.
Crucially, the strong relationship between Eghbali and Aston Villa owner Nassef Sawiris underpinned the agreement, which was finalised on Saturday afternoon shortly before Rogers played in the bronze-medal match. Arsenal were then offered the chance to match the bid but declined, sticking to their lower valuation. They will now consider alternative targets, including Paris St-Germain's Bradley Barcola and Bournemouth's Junior Kroupi.
The opportunity to work with Alonso was a key factor in persuading Rogers to choose west London. The two-time Champions League winner as a player was hired partly to convince top talent to join Chelsea. Rogers, a versatile forward, becomes the fourth signing of the summer for the Blues, following Marco Palestra, Emmanuel Emegha, and Geovany Quenda.
Rogers reunites with Palmer, his former Manchester City academy teammate. Palmer has long been the first to message Rogers after good games, and the pair share a trademark “cold” celebration. Rogers first used it while at Middlesbrough in December 2023, with Palmer copying it days later. “He definitely copied me,” Rogers said last year. “Check the timeline, I did it first!”
The deal is the first serious sign that Chelsea have moved on from exclusively signing young, untested players. Co-owner Eghbali had indicated last season that the club would target players ready to challenge for the title. For Arsenal, the loss of their priority target leaves them scrambling for alternatives.
