Chelsea have completed the £117m signing of England midfielder Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, making him the most expensive British player in history. The deal is the latest in a remarkable pattern: Chelsea's first-team squad next season could contain twice as many players who graduated from Manchester City's academy as from their own Cobham system.
That revelation came into focus six years ago, when Chelsea lost the 2020 FA Youth Cup final 3-2 to Manchester City. Rogers scored that night, while Cole Palmer and Liam Delap also featured for City. Now all three are at Chelsea, alongside fellow City academy graduates Romeo Lavia, Jamie Gittens and Tosin Adarabioyu. Together, the six players have cost the Blues almost £300m in transfer fees since 2023.

New Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso will have only three permanent senior squad members who came through Chelsea's own ranks: Levi Colwill, who played in that Youth Cup defeat, captain Reece James, and Josh Acheampong. Trevoh Chalobah, also a Cobham product, is in advanced talks to join Serie A side Como.
The attraction to City's production line is partly driven by the success of Cole Palmer, who joined Chelsea for £40m plus £2.5m in add-ons in 2023 and has become one of the Premier League's standout performers. One former insider told BBC Sport that anyone from City "knows what good looks like". Another factor is Joe Shields, who worked in City's academy recruitment and now handles youth and senior recruitment at Stamford Bridge.
Clubs are also incentivised to sell academy-developed players because the fees count as pure profit under Premier League and Uefa spending rules. Chelsea's sale of Tyrique George to Everton this summer is one example. Under both Roman Abramovich and Todd Boehly's Clearlake Capital, the club has sold homegrown talent to balance substantial spending on new signings.
Former Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has acknowledged the difficulty of giving academy graduates opportunities in a team competing for major honours. Players like Rogers were deemed not ready for first-team football, while others like Palmer and Jadon Sancho chose to continue their development elsewhere.
Chelsea are now also interested in signing England defender John Stones on a free transfer after his Manchester City contract expired. The 32-year-old, who made 295 appearances for City and won six Premier League titles and the Champions League, is also being considered by Inter Milan. Chelsea are in talks to sign Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix and assessing Como's Jacobo Ramon, while looking to sell central defenders including Axel Disasi and Benoit Badiashile.
The £117m Rogers deal was announced on Tuesday evening, with Chelsea also in talks with Aston Villa about winger Alejandro Garnacho moving on loan in the opposite direction. Whether this latest raid on City's academy yields the same dividends as Palmer remains to be seen, but the blueprint is unmistakable.
