Chelsea complete £40m Quenda signing as George heads to Everton in £24m deal

Chelsea have announced the £40m signing of Sporting winger Geovany Quenda, a deal agreed as far back as March 2025 under Enzo Maresca, but confirmed under new manager Xabi Alonso.

The 19-year-old Portugal under-21 international has signed an eight-year contract and becomes Alonso's second arrival after the £42m capture of Atalanta full-back Marco Palestra. Quenda, who has already made 86 appearances for Sporting including 16 in the Champions League after breaking through under Ruben Amorim, said: 'It feels great to be here. Chelsea is a great team and I am excited to play here at Stamford Bridge. The club has shown faith in players like me and I am proud to be here, proud to be part of this club.'

While Quenda arrives, another Chelsea winger is heading out. Everton have agreed a deal worth up to £24m, including add-ons, for Tyrique George. The 20-year-old, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Goodison Park, made 11 appearances for the Toffees, starting once. Everton manager David Moyes called him 'an excellent boy with an excellent work-rate'. The deal is subject to personal terms and a medical, with an upfront fee of around £18m and the remainder based on European qualification and appearances. Chelsea have inserted a 15% sell-on clause.

George, an England Under-21 international who came through Chelsea's academy, had been available for transfer for the past 12 months. He held talks with RB Leipzig last summer, while a £22m move to Fulham collapsed on transfer deadline day in September 2025.

The move would make George Everton's second summer signing following the £16m capture of Hayden Hackney from Middlesbrough.

Elsewhere at Chelsea, Andrey Santos is set to join Manchester United after a £50m deal was agreed, while Marc Cucurella has joined Real Madrid and Tyrique George is on his way to Everton. Valentin Barco, who announced his departure from sister club Strasbourg, is set to join Chelsea as they look to strengthen midfield options. The club have also held talks over Rayo Vallecano full-back Pep Chavarria and explored a move for Crystal Palace centre-back Maxence Lacroix, while failing in their attempts to sign Granit Xhaka from Sunderland.

Amid the comings and goings, Chelsea announced that 19-year-old Jesse Derry has signed a new six-year contract and is set to join Sporting on loan – the same club that sold Quenda to the Blues.
