Morgan Rogers is officially a Chelsea player after completing a £117million transfer from Aston Villa — a fee that makes the 23-year-old the most expensive British footballer in history. The England international has signed a contract until 2033, with an option for a further year, and told the club: “I’m so excited. For me, Chelsea are the biggest club in London.”
The deal, which eclipsed the £116m Manchester City paid for Elliot Anderson, was a first major win for new manager Xabi Alonso. The Spaniard held productive talks with Rogers, who added: “I’ve had a few conversations with him. It very much fits with the way I see the game.”

Rogers, who scored 31 goals in 125 appearances for Villa and helped them win the Europa League last season, came through West Brom’s academy before moves to Manchester City, Middlesbrough and then Villa. He made his England debut in November 2024.
With Rogers secured, Chelsea have turned their attention to strengthening defence. They are interested in signing England centre-back John Stones on a free transfer after his Manchester City contract expired at the end of June. The 32-year-old, who made 295 appearances for City and won six Premier League titles and the Champions League, is also being considered by Inter Milan.
Chelsea are in talks to sign Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix and assessing Como’s Jacobo Ramon as they look to rebuild their backline. To make space, they are selling central defenders: fellow England international Trevoh Chalobah is in talks to join Como, while Axel Disasi and Benoit Badiashile are among those available for transfer.
The Blues have already offloaded several players this summer as Alonso reshapes the squad, but the capture of Rogers — and the potential addition of Stones — signals a clear intent to challenge for major honours.
