Morgan Rogers was quick to mention one of his closest friends, Cole Palmer, when he signed for Chelsea from Aston Villa for £117m. "We've been speaking about this for a while — that we would always love to play together," said the attacking midfielder. "He's been non-stop ringing my phone, texting me, and I can't wait. That's probably the most special thing, playing with one of your best friends."
Now the question is whether new Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso can find a system to accommodate two such similar profiles. Both are attack-minded midfielders who thrive in central areas. At Aston Villa, Unai Emery deployed Rogers on the left of a 4-2-3-1, where he narrowed in from the wing and often curled the ball towards the far post with his right foot — a tactic that helped Villa transition rapidly after long spells without the ball.

Alonso, however, favours a possession-dominant approach. The Spaniard seeks to control the ball and set up sustained attacks in the opponent's half. Last season, however, there was an increase in man-to-man pressure high up the pitch across the league, making playing out from the back harder — a tactical shift that could favour Alonso's brand of control.
Rogers' positional versatility — he can play as a narrow winger on either flank or even as a centre-forward — gives Alonso options. The challenge will be to integrate him alongside Palmer without sacrificing defensive balance. The Blues could also overhaul their wide options after Rogers' arrival, with interest building in Kerim Alajbegovic, according to reports. Whether Alonso's system can unlock the partnership Rogers and Palmer have long dreamed of remains the defining subplot of Chelsea's summer.
