Chelsea are leading the race to sign Jordan Henderson on a free transfer, a move that signals a dramatic shift in recruitment strategy under new head coach Xabi Alonso. The 36-year-old midfielder has been granted permission to leave Brentford despite having a year left on his contract, and multiple Premier League clubs are interested. But Chelsea have emerged as the frontrunners, with Alonso desperate to add experience to a squad built around youthful promise.
Henderson is currently nursing a broken arm suffered during England's World Cup celebrations after their last-16 win against Mexico. He remained in North America for the rest of the tournament, acting as a key figure in the dressing room. His leadership was highlighted by England boss Thomas Tuchel, who revealed that Henderson gave a “very impressive speech” before the third-place play-off against France, which England won 6-4. “He helped unbelievably today,” Tuchel said. “That was very emotional and very, very impressive.”
“Chelsea lead race for Jordan Henderson on free transfer as Alonso prioritises experience over youth after past failures.”
The pursuit of Henderson comes as Chelsea also open talks with Brighton striker Danny Welbeck, 35, while targeting Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix, 26, for £52m. Welbeck's potential arrival could push 23-year-old Liam Delap, once considered one of the Premier League's most exciting young strikers, out of the first-team picture. This marks a departure from the club's recent focus on youth, which had seen them sign players under 23 almost exclusively for two years.
Chelsea have been burned by experienced signings before. In the summer of 2022, then-manager Thomas Tuchel spent heavily on Raheem Sterling, Kalidou Koulibaly and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Sterling, earning over £300,000 a week, left on a free transfer in January 2026 after the team finished 12th in 2022-23. Koulibaly departed after one season, joining Al-Hilal, and Aubameyang also left on a free after struggling for form.
Alonso, however, appears willing to take the risk. The Chelsea boss sees Henderson as an alternative after Sunderland flatly rejected an £8m bid for Granit Xhaka, who played under Alonso at Bayer Leverkusen. Henderson is also said to get on well with Chelsea's new £117m signing, Morgan Rogers. If the deal goes through, it will be the clearest sign yet that Alonso believes experience, not potential, is what Chelsea need to climb back to the top.
