Chelsea are in talks to sign Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson, a pair of veteran forwards that would mark a sharp departure from the club’s long-standing policy of recruiting young talent.
Welbeck, 35, scored a career-high 13 Premier League goals for Brighton last season and is understood to be keen on a move to Stamford Bridge, with optimism from Chelsea’s side that a deal can be concluded. The former England striker has a year left on his contract, which he extended in March until the end of the 2026-27 season.
“Chelsea open talks for Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson, signalling a shift from young-player policy.”
Henderson, 36, has a year remaining on his Brentford deal, but the Bees are willing to let the England midfielder leave on a free transfer after he made 34 appearances in all competitions last season.
The surprise double move stems from an admission by influential Chelsea owner Behdad Eghbali in April that the club’s model of signing young players needs a “tweak”. New manager Xabi Alonso has space in his backroom staff after set-piece coach Bernardo Cueva moved into a behind-the-scenes role, and Chelsea are also in talks to recruit highly regarded set-piece coach Austin MacPhee from Aston Villa, who scored more set-piece goals than any other team in Europe’s top five leagues in 2023-24.
Should Welbeck arrive, the likelihood of departures from Chelsea’s forward line would increase. Liam Delap, who cost £30m from Ipswich a year ago and is considered second-choice behind João Pedro, is increasingly expected to leave. Nicolas Jackson, who returned from a loan at Bayern Munich, is open to departing amid interest from Aston Villa. Marc Guiu, valued at about £25m, is available for a permanent transfer or loan, while Emmanuel Emegha’s future is also uncertain.
Welbeck would reunite with João Pedro, who impressed with 15 league goals in his debut Chelsea campaign. He also scored twice when Brighton won 3-1 at Stamford Bridge last season. If completed, the move would add to the long line of players switching from Brighton to Chelsea in recent years, including Robert Sánchez, Moises Caicedo and João Pedro.
Chelsea have already signed Morgan Rogers for a club-record £117m, full-back Marco Palestra, and are closing in on centre-back Maxence Lacroix this summer. Their pursuit of Welbeck and Henderson – alongside attempts to sign 33-year-old Granit Xhaka from Sunderland, which were rebuffed – signals a clear shift in strategy under Alonso as they seek to blend youth with proven experience.
