Xabi Alonso took charge of his first Chelsea match on Tuesday—a chaotic 6-4 pre-season victory against Western Sydney Wanderers—but it was his refusal to rule out moves for veterans Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson that spoke loudest about a club at a crossroads.
The new Chelsea manager, speaking after the win at Accor Stadium in Homebush, kept his cards close. “I’m sure that from today to the last day of the transfer [window] there will be a lot of links, a lot of rumours,” Alonso said. “But for sure, we need proper balance in terms of qualities, in terms of positions, in terms of balance. We want to have a complete squad and we want to make a good team.”
“Xabi Alonso hints at signing older players after Chelsea beat Western Sydney 6-4, as Welbeck and Henderson close in.”
Chelsea are understood to be in talks over a surprise move to sign the 35-year-old Welbeck from Brighton, with the club also reportedly interested in signing the 36-year-old Henderson from Brentford. Henderson is expected to be allowed to leave Brentford on a free transfer just a year after moving to west London, while Crystal Palace and France defender Maxence Lacroix—aged 26, but still notably older than most recent Blues signings—is a £52m target.
The pursuit of experience marks a dramatic departure from the policy that saw Chelsea spend heavily on youth after the club’s takeover four years ago. That earlier approach, overseen by then manager Thomas Tuchel, brought in Raheem Sterling (then 27, up to £50m), Kalidou Koulibaly (then 31, £33m) and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (then 33, £10.3m). All three failed to justify their wages or fees: Sterling left on a free transfer in January 2026 after struggling for form and fitness; Koulibaly was sold to Al-Hilal after one season; Aubameyang, signed days before Tuchel’s sacking, left on a free after barely playing under Graham Potter and Frank Lampard.
Since then, Chelsea have focused on younger signings, but Alonso’s first match suggested a blend. He fielded a youthful starting XI featuring Liam Delap—a 23-year-old striker who netted only three times in a difficult debut season—and Tosin Adarabioyo. In the 63rd minute, Alonso introduced stars including Cole Palmer and João Pedro, the Brazilian forward who scored a hat-trick in nine minutes to turn the game. The 17-year-old Dastan Satpayev, a Kazakh triallist yet to officially sign, opened the scoring after six minutes from a pass by another teenager, Ryan Kavuma-McQueen.
Delap’s place in the first-team picture could be under threat if Welbeck arrives. Alonso said of Delap: “Every player that is involved is doing well, Liam as well. It was 60 minutes when he had to battle hard … He’s doing well and preparing for the season.” But the manager added that Chelsea have “an idea, a plan” for the squad, and with the Premier League season looming, the question is whether that plan now relies on seasoned heads to steady a young side.
