Conor McGregor's long-awaited return to the UFC lasted just 69 seconds before he crumpled to the canvas in Las Vegas, his right knee buckling under him during a flying left kick. The former two-weight champion, 37, who had not fought since breaking his left leg against Dustin Poirier in July 2021, landed awkwardly after the opening strike and immediately signalled to the referee that he could not continue. Max Holloway was awarded a first-round TKO victory, the third consecutive loss for the Irishman.

McGregor, who had previously suffered a broken toe in training that derailed a planned June 2024 bout with Michael Chandler, and was found liable for rape in an Irish civil court in 2018, insisted the injury came 'out of nowhere'. In a social media post, he wrote: 'My head gasket is gone. Destroyed. I had no injury / injuries going into the fight. … This came out of nowhere. I am beyond dark here. I can only describe it as hell.'

Social media users pointed to video of McGregor stepping gingerly out of his shoes before the fight as evidence of a pre-existing issue, but UFC president Dana White dismissed the speculation. 'If there was a pre-existing [injury], somebody would have noticed it,' White said, noting that the pre-fight face-off had 80 million views without anyone spotting a problem. He added that UFC doctors believe McGregor has suffered a ruptured ACL.

White told the post-fight press conference: 'I was expecting at least a one-round war. … We're assuming a blown ACL. I'm no doctor, but that's what I figured when I saw it. And [our] doctors think the same thing too.'

Holloway, who now leads the series 1-1 after McGregor won their first meeting, called for a third fight to settle the rivalry. 'I want to see what his injury is first, but I then want to come back again in 2027,' Holloway said. 'I will take some time to have a break to see my family and then you guys will see Blessed return in 2027.'

McGregor's career has been increasingly derailed by injuries and issues outside the sport. In October 2025, he accepted an 18-month ban for 'whereabouts failures' after missing three drug tests. Now facing a lengthy recovery from a potential ACL tear, his fighting future is uncertain.
