After 25 years away, Coventry City will return to the top flight with a Friday night trip to the champions, Arsenal, on 21 August. The Sky Blues, who won the Championship last season, face Mikel Arteta’s side in the Premier League curtain raiser – 34 days after the World Cup final in the United States.
But manager Frank Lampard is not waiting until then to strengthen. With the squad needing reinforcements at left-back, centre-back, out wide and in goal, Lampard is in the US scouting potential recruits at the World Cup. “The World Cup is a great stage to look at players, so we’re looking across the spectrum of players,” he told Gary Lineker’s "The Rest is Football" show.
“Coventry City return to Premier League after 25 years, opening at Arsenal on 21 August as Frank Lampard scouts World Cup talent.”
Promoted clubs have been forced to spend upwards of £100m in recent years just to stand a chance of staying up, and Coventry face an immediate test. Last season’s No 1, Carl Rushworth, has returned to parent club Brighton after his loan stint, and City are keen to sign him permanently after having one offer rejected. Among the World Cup players under consideration are Sweden goalkeeper Viktor Johansson, who made his comeback from a severe shoulder injury to earn a spot in the squad, and Australia defender Harry Souttar, who featured for Ipswich in the 2024-25 top flight.
The opening weekend throws up other heavyweight fixtures. Hull City, promoted via the play-offs, host Manchester United on 22 August, while Ipswich entertain Sunderland. Andoni Iraola – who replaced the sacked Arne Slot at Liverpool after leaving Bournemouth – makes his debut away at Newcastle on 23 August. That same day, Manchester City begin life without Pep Guardiola at home to Bournemouth, who themselves have a new manager in Marco Rose. The following Monday, Xabi Alonso starts his Chelsea tenure away at Fulham.
The season, which runs until 30 May 2027, features a later start and end due to the World Cup. For Coventry, the first top-flight match at their home stadium since 2001 will come against Hull on the second weekend. Lampard and his players will hope that his scouting mission pays off before they face the champions on that opening night.
