PepsiCo has urgently recalled its Doritos Chilli Heatwave crisps after some packs were accidentally filled with Tangy Cheese flavour – a potentially life-threatening mistake for anyone with a milk allergy.
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) warned that the 140g bags with batch code GBC 209 184C and a best-before date of 5 December 2026 “possibly contain the wrong ingredient”. The Tangy Cheese crisps contain milk, while the Chilli Heatwave variety does not, meaning the allergen is not listed on the packaging.
“Doritos Chilli Heatwave crisps recalled after packs mistakenly filled with milk-containing Tangy Cheese flavour.”
“This product contains milk, making it a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy or intolerance to milk or milk constituents,” the FSA said in a statement. The agency has advised PepsiCo to contact allergy support organisations and to display point-of-sale notices explaining the recall.
According to Allergy UK, most allergic reactions to milk are mild, but moderate or severe reactions can occur. Mild symptoms include an itchy mouth, swollen lips, a red raised rash, vomiting, nausea, a runny nose and sneezing. Severe anaphylaxis can cause swelling of the tongue or throat, difficulty swallowing or breathing, and dizziness.
Customers who have bought the affected packs are being instructed to return them for a full refund. The recall, first announced on 18 July 2026, affects only the specific batch and pack size. No other Doritos products are thought to be involved.
The mix-up raises serious questions about quality-control checks in food production, particularly for products destined for allergy sufferers who rely on accurate labelling to stay safe.
