Ederson extends Atalanta contract after Man Utd move collapses as Tielemans signs

Brazil midfielder Ederson has signed a contract extension at Atalanta after his proposed £35m move to Manchester United collapsed over a medical issue, while United completed the signing of Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa for the same fee.

United had agreed a £35m fee with Atalanta for the 27-year-old on 2 June, but plans for a medical in early July were scrapped when Ederson received a late Brazil call-up for the World Cup after Wesley was injured. Initial tests in the United States flagged an area of concern, prompting Ederson to fly to England for further tests after Brazil's last-16 defeat by Norway. Specialists were involved, and the results led United to back out of the transfer.

Sources had told BBC Sport the deal could be resurrected later in the summer at different terms, but Ederson has now extended his contract with Atalanta. The Serie A side did not disclose the length of the new deal.

Meanwhile, United confirmed the signing of Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa on a five-year deal after meeting a £35m release clause. The 29-year-old Belgium midfielder, who helped his country reach the World Cup quarter-finals, has spent three seasons at Villa, having previously played for Leicester City.

"It's hard to describe just how proud I am to join Manchester United," Tielemans said. "Signing for such a special club feels incredible. It is the culmination of years of dedication since I first fell in love with football."

Tielemans will wear the number 18 shirt vacated by Casemiro. He is noted for scoring Leicester's winner in the 2021 FA Cup final and Aston Villa's winner in the Europa League final in May. He made his senior debut for Anderlecht aged 16 years and 82 days, and has played 668 games for club and country, scoring 79 goals from 578 club appearances.

United's director of football Jason Wilcox said: "Youri has consistently been one of the most outstanding midfielders in the Premier League throughout the past seven years. He has all of the technical qualities, as well as the ambition and mentality, to thrive at Manchester United. Youri's consistency is exceptional, and he will add further composure, creativity and leadership to our squad."

Last season, Tielemans was restricted to 35 appearances due to calf and ankle problems. At the World Cup, he scored a late equaliser against Senegal and an extra-time penalty winner in a 3-2 victory, but his tournament ended prematurely when he was injured in the warm-up before Belgium's quarter-final defeat by Spain.

Tielemans' arrival follows the signings of midfielder Andrey Santos and goalkeeper Karl Darlow. The Ederson deal remains on hold, but the Brazilian's extension at Atalanta suggests United will need to look elsewhere for midfield reinforcements.
