Egypt own goal earns Australia draw after Bos injury and police clash

Australia survived a horror tackle on star left-back Jordy Bos and a controversial no-card decision to draw 1-1 with Egypt in their World Cup last-32 clash in Dallas — a result that leaves the tie finely poised before extra time.

The Feyenoord defender, 23, was left writhing on the turf after a crunching tackle from Egypt's Zizo just before half-time. Though Hafez won the ball, he went straight through Bos, who received lengthy treatment before being carried from the field unable to put weight on his left leg. Australia boss Paul Okon was furious, telling SBS: “Terrible tackle. From what we understand, the referee played advantage but he doesn’t come back and book the player.”

Bos had been a standout for the Socceroos, clocking 36.7 km/h in their group-stage win over Turkey — faster than Kylian Mbappe, Erling Haaland and others — according to Fifa data. He was replaced by Kai Trewin.

Egypt had taken the lead through Emam Ashour, as Australia struggled to impose themselves. But the second half saw the Socceroos grow into the game, and the equaliser came in spectacular fashion. A free-kick from O'Neill was whipped towards the front post; Harry Souttar rose highest but didn't get a touch — his presence was enough to distract Egypt defender Mohamed Hany, who headed into his own net.

“It’s so simple too,” noted the live commentary, with Australia camped on the edge of the Egypt box after the goal. Okon’s men had been the better side since equalising, though they could not find a winner before full time.

Earlier, an impromptu autograph session involving Egypt's World Cup squad descended into chaos when a furious member of the team’s coaching staff clashed with Dallas police in a hotel lobby.

The winner of this tie will face Argentina or Cape Verde in the last 16. Lionel Messi has six goals so far this tournament, helping create one of the best golden boot races in recent memory.
