Eight people made a miracle escape from the jaws of death on Sunday morning when their seaplane crashed into New York's East River, landing in choppy waters and partially capsizing.

Terrified residents of Queens, Brooklyn and Manhattan watched as the plane bobbed upright in the river, with lifeboats racing to pull the passengers off. The fire service rescued eight people from the aircraft, and two passengers with minor injuries were evaluated by emergency medical staff.

Brian, a New Yorker who filmed the aftermath from his apartment window, told Metro: 'I didn't see the impact, only all the emergency boats rushing over after. I'm so glad everyone is safe. It is amazing news.'

He added: 'It feels like it's happening more and more. A year or so ago we had a helicopter crash into the Hudson River.'

After the passengers were removed, the plane was pulled upright and towed back to the docks. The NYPD said an investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
