England’s World Cup dream shattered as Argentina’s late double sparks player unrest

England’s first appearance in a World Cup final since 1966 seemed assured when Anthony Gordon put them ahead shortly after half-time in Atlanta. But Argentina, driven by champion courage, scored twice in the closing stages to win 2-1 — and in the aftermath, senior players confronted Thomas Tuchel over his tactics. Enzo Fernández equalised with a fierce drive in the 86th minute after Argentina worked a short corner via Lionel Messi. Lautaro Martínez then headed home unmarked in stoppage time from a Messi cross, leaving England floored before they could reach extra time. Tuchel had sought to protect the lead by switching to a back five, bringing on Ezri Konsa for Gordon. The tactical shift invited pressure, and Argentina dominated the closing stages. “I think ball possession plays a crucial role. It’s maybe not in our DNA like it is in the Spanish, Argentinian or Brazilian DNA,” Tuchel said afterwards, blaming an inability to keep the ball. But three players complained privately about the defensive approach, according to the BBC. Sky Sports reporter Rob Dorsett said: “A lot of England’s players, and some of the senior players, I might say, are not happy with the decisions that Thomas Tuchel took.” Tuchel, whose contract runs through Euro 2028, reaffirmed his commitment to the job. England now face France in Saturday’s bronze final — a match that will do little to ease the sense of an opportunity lost.
