Harry Kane's World Cup exit looms as England face false nine dilemma

Harry Kane swerved the question just minutes after England’s 2-1 semi-final defeat to Argentina in Atlanta. “It’s too early to talk about that,” the captain said when asked if he would still be around for the 2030 World Cup. The stadium had just watched his side fall short of a first men’s final since 1966 – and the answer betrayed a truth few at the Football Association want to confront: England are running out of time to find a successor for their all-time record scorer.

Kane, who has captained his country since Gareth Southgate gave him the armband nine years ago, has 85 goals in 124 appearances. Alongside Jude Bellingham, he scored six times in this World Cup, shouldering the attacking burden almost alone. In seven matches across North America, he played virtually every minute, substituted only twice – with six minutes left against Panama and one minute remaining in the last-16 tie with Mexico. The workload may have caught up with him: after a double against DR Congo in the last 32, he failed to score from open play in the final three games.

Harry Kane's England World Cup career likely ends Saturday, leaving Thomas Tuchel with few proven attacking options.

Now Saturday’s third-placed play-off against France in Miami for the bronze medal is likely to be his last World Cup appearance. Kane turns 33 in 10 days and will be 35 when the home European Championship concludes in two years’ time. By the 2030 edition, he will be approaching 37. Realistically, his World Cup career ends here.

The question of what follows is made more urgent by the lack of tested alternatives. Head coach Thomas Tuchel barely used his bench: Ollie Watkins played only six minutes in the whole tournament – replacing Kane against Panama – while Ivan Toney got a few minutes of stoppage time in the Argentina defeat. Both are 30 themselves. The only other strikers used by England in the past 12 months are Dominic Solanke, 28, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin, 29. In the 2024-25 Premier League season, a record low of just three English forwards scored 10 or more goals.

The numbers paint a stark picture. If Kane is not available, England may be forced into a false-nine system – a tactical switch that would require a fundamental shift in approach. Tuchel, who appeared to have faith only in his captain, has given little indication he trusts any other way of playing. The succession planning has to start now, because time, as it does for every striker, is running out.
