Armed police swooped on brawling England and Argentina supporters outside the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia, on Wednesday night, making multiple arrests after the Three Lions’ heartbreaking 2-1 World Cup semi-final defeat. Images showed a small group of England fans in handcuffs, still wearing their Three Lions shirts, while other supporters were seen confronting officers as chaos erupted following Lionel Messi’s late comeback victory.
The violence came moments after the final whistle confirmed England’s exit — a defeat made all the more painful by the manner of it. Thomas Tuchel’s side had led from the 55th minute, when Anthony Gordon tucked home Morgan Rogers’ cross, putting the Three Lions within sight of a first World Cup final in 60 years. Jordan Pickford saved from Nicolas Gonzalez, and the post denied Alexis Mac Allister. But Tuchel’s decision to drop deep proved fatal. Twice Messi delivered from the England right, and twice the ball ended up in Pickford’s net. The 2-1 scoreline ended England’s hopes of a fairytale in New Jersey.

As the scale of the loss sank in, fighting broke out between rival fans near the stadium. Armed police intervened, detaining a number of supporters. Scenes of disorder were also reported in Birmingham and New York City, where Argentina and England fans clashed. The night grew even more bitter when Argentina players celebrated by brandishing a banner reading, in Spanish, “The Falkland Islands belong to Argentina” — a sign widely condemned given the islands’ status as a British Overseas Territory.
Tuchel, who immediately came under fire for his “cowardly” substitutions, said he had no regrets. But with the third-place play-off against France in Miami looming, the question of how he lifts his squad after losing a match they were winning with six minutes to go hangs heavy. The aggression on the streets of Atlanta only underscored the raw emotions of a night that promised so much and delivered so little.
