England fans brace for 1am World Cup kick-off as BBC offers 'stay up or catch up' option

England face Mexico at the Estadio Azteca in Monday's World Cup last-16 tie, but fans back home will have to choose between staying up until 1am BST or waking early – the BBC has launched a 'Stay Up or Catch Up' offer to cover both camps.

The match was briefly thrown into chaos when FIFA proposed moving the kick-off forward by six hours to avoid forecast thunderstorms, but the English FA and Mexican Football Federation pushed back, arguing it would force players into the midday heat. FIFA performed a U-turn, confirming the original time remains.

England face Mexico at 1am BST; BBC offers re-run options as fans fear storm delays.

Now, with the game set to air exclusively live on BBC One and BBC iPlayer – presented by Kelly Cates alongside Wayne Rooney, Joe Hart and Micah Richards – the BBC director of sport, Alex Kay-Jelski, said: "World Cup knockout football is absolutely unmissable, but a 1:00am kick-off isn't realistic for everyone. We wanted to make sure there was an option for those fans who just can't stay up to experience one of England's biggest matches live."

Those who choose to sleep will find a full no-spoiler re-run on BBC Two from 07:10 BST, with on-demand available on iPlayer immediately after the match. Highlights, radio commentary on BBC Radio 5 Live and a 3D experience on the BBC Sport site are also available.

England manager Thomas Tuchel has urged parents to let children stay up. "There's so much school to go to, but the World Cup is every four years. Let them watch," he said after England's dramatic 2-1 win over DR Congo, which drew a peak audience of 16.3 million. Pubs in England and Wales can stay open until 05:00, with departing Prime Minister Kier Starmer extending hours.

But fans online are sceptical. One wrote on Reddit: "Fully expect there will now be a storm delay just to make the farce even worse." Another predicted: "Pubs close at 5am. Delayed game kicks off at 5am." A third said: "It would be kinda funny if it gets rained off and everyone just skives work to watch it at 9am UK time instead."

England are slight betting favourites, but Mexico's home-crowd advantage at the high-altitude Azteca makes this a finely balanced tie. Fans will hope the only drama comes from the football.
