England face Mexico at Azteca as thunderstorms threaten kick-off time

England must end Mexico’s 13-year unbeaten run at the Azteca Stadium in a World Cup last-16 tie that could be moved because of severe thunderstorms.

Thomas Tuchel’s side, yet to hit the heights expected pre-tournament, face a passionate home crowd and the complications of altitude when they meet Javier Aguirre’s co-hosts. A kick-off originally scheduled for 1am BST on Monday 6 July may be brought forward to 7pm BST on Sunday after weather concerns in Mexico City.

Aguirre has no major worries, though star winger Julian Quinones is managing a knock. Right‑back is Tuchel’s primary concern: Reece James and Jarrel Quansah are both fighting for fitness, and Djed Spence could continue despite struggling throughout the DR Congo game. Declan Rice will play despite “terrible” neural pain, as Tuchel described it.

Earlier on Sunday, Australia and Egypt met in the last 32. Australia, after a quiet Egyptian second half, began to get on top. Egypt’s Hafez was replaced by Trezeguet with 10 minutes left — an attacking substitution as Mohamed Salah’s teammates sought a goal.
