Lightning delay and Bellingham brilliance: England survive Mexico thriller

Thunder and lightning near the Azteca Stadium forced a one-hour delay to England’s last-16 World Cup clash with Mexico on Sunday night — but Jude Bellingham needed only 98 seconds of the match to ignite the Three Lions’ path to a 3-2 victory.

The match was due to kick off at 1am UK time (6pm local) when the stadium activated its thunderstorm protocol less than an hour before the scheduled start. A FIFA statement confirmed: “Due to adverse weather conditions in Mexico City, including risk caused by lightning in the vicinity of the stadium, the kick-off … has been delayed to 19.00 local time.” Screens inside the stadium warned supporters of potentially severe weather. Both teams had been told to delay their arrivals, but England and Mexico still turned up at 11.30pm UK time.

England beat Mexico 3-2 after lightning delay and Jude Bellingham's two quick goals.

“We’re ready. We can’t wait to get out there,” captain Harry Kane told the BBC before the game. “It’s been a good [reaction to us], they’re excited for the game, it’s not been hostile at all, a great occasion.”

Former England defender Micah Richards noted the delay could affect players’ nutrition: “For an hour delay maybe it won’t impact things too much, but towards the end of the game they might need a top up [of energy].” Wayne Rooney, however, saw a potential advantage: “It’s just keeping your focus… I think the players are professional enough.”

Once the match began, Bellingham proved unflappable. The Real Madrid midfielder scored two goals in 98 seconds to give England a 2-0 lead in the first half. He was later described by the Standard as the “main man” and a “midfield maestro”, while goalkeeper Jordan Pickford was praised as fearless. Mexico fought back, but England held on to win 3-2, setting up a quarter‑final date with Norway.

After the final whistle, Bellingham urged fans back home: “Text your bosses that you’re not coming into work… Pour another shot.”
