Bellingham's brilliance and Kane's nerve take 10-man England past Mexico into World Cup quarter-finals

Jude Bellingham scored twice in less than 100 seconds, Harry Kane converted a penalty and 10-man England held on for a thrilling 3-2 victory over Mexico at the Estadio Azteca to book a World Cup quarter-final against Norway. The match was delayed by an hour due to severe weather, with heavy rain and thunderstorms over Mexico City lasting all afternoon. When play finally began, England wobbled early before Bellingham struck. The first goal came after 31 minutes, and the second followed almost immediately, putting England 2-0 up. Julian Quinones pulled one back before half-time, and the second half started badly for England when Jarell Quansah was sent off in the 54th minute after a VAR review — the fourth England player ever dismissed at a World Cup. Kane restored the two-goal lead from the penalty spot after Anthony Gordon was wiped out by Mexico goalkeeper Raul Rangel. But Kane was then penalised for a challenge on Brian Gutierrez, leading to a Raul Jimenez penalty that made it 3-2. England defended resolutely for the final 40 minutes, and the win was sealed after 11 minutes of added time. Thomas Tuchel criticised referee Alireza Faghani after the match, saying: "Just not good enough, the referees are just not good enough, the fourth officials are just not good enough, that's the bottom line." He also questioned the nationality of the VAR officials, prompting BBC pundit Joe Hart to scrutinise Tuchel for mentioning it. England's celebrations saw the squad sing Wonderwall with fans. Jordan Henderson, an unused substitute, tripped over advertising hoardings during the singalong and was stretchered off, later taken to a hospital in Mexico City. Peter Crouch embraced Kane on the touchline, shouting: "I f***ing love you." England will face Norway next after Erling Haaland's two goals eliminated Brazil. The Prince of Wales wrote on X: "Well done England! Bring on the quarter final!" US President Donald Trump hailed Kane as "a GREAT player." Liam Gallagher teased Kane after the captain lost his voice singing, posting: "Hard work that singing."
