England stars enjoy themed dinners and Lucozade pouches as Tuchel builds World Cup bond

Thomas Tuchel is turning England’s World Cup camp into a culinary experience, with themed food nights and regular barbecues designed to strengthen team spirit. The Football Association has brought in top chefs to oversee a range of meals, from chicken and fish to vegan and vegetarian options. After England’s win over New Zealand in the sweltering Tampa heat last weekend, the squad enjoyed pizza. At the last Euros, they had Italian, Chinese and Mexican themed nights. Tuchel believes outdoor dining brings everyone together, and FA experts say it aids mental and cognitive recovery.

Hydration is also getting a high-tech upgrade. The FA has shipped in 1,000 Lucozade Elite pouches — a 350ml high-carbohydrate electrolyte drink used during games to refuel. England’s players will have 5.7 million millilitres available, including specialized pouches made exclusively for the team and not commercially available. Because FIFA is strict on branding, the pouches will not display the Lucozade sticker at refuelling breaks. Dr Chris Rosimus, the FA’s Lead Performance Nutritionist, said: “As the game continues to evolve, performance teams are constantly looking at practical ways to support players in training and competition. Hydration, fuelling and recovery all play an important role, particularly when players are operating in demanding schedules, challenging environments and high-intensity competition.”

The pouches are a retro throwback to John Barnes’s 1990s advert, when he kicked a carton of the isotonic drink into a dressing-room bin. Today, Jude Bellingham fronts Lucozade’s campaign. “Everything around preparation, hydration and fuelling has to be right so you can perform consistently throughout a game,” he said. “The right preparation can make a big difference.”

As England fine-tune their menu and hydration, the World Cup itself looms. The opening match of the tournament is days away, and on day two co-hosts Canada will get their campaign underway against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto. For Tuchel and his squad, every detail — from the barbecue menu to the Lucozade pouch — is seen as potential edge in the quest for glory.
