The body of Andrea Bello was discovered protecting her one-year-old daughter after earthquakes struck Venezuela. Her husband, Marítimo de La Guaira player Héctor Bello, asked for 'strength' in an emotional tribute. Their toddler, Alana, survived thanks to her mother's sacrifice and was found under the rubble by search and rescue. Nearly 50,000 people are missing and at least 589 have died following magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 earthquakes around Caracas on Thursday. The rare double strike, 39 seconds apart, was the strongest since 1900, according to the US Geological Survey, which has predicted more than 10,000 deaths. 'How do I explain to your daughter that you lost your life to save hers and I wasn't there?' Héctor wrote. 'Give me strength now because I can't take any more.' Alana remains in hospital with a black eye and cuts, alongside her aunt. The country's football federation also confirmed the death of player Yordelis Pereira. Thousands are homeless, with buildings reduced to rubble.
In a separate tragedy, a three-year-old boy died after becoming trapped in a car in Paris as France recorded its hottest day. The toddler slipped into the family car while his father thought he was sleeping but could not escape due to the child lock, prosecutor Guirec Le Bras said. The mother was napping with their 18-month-old; the father worked in the garden shed. 'He apparently shut himself in and became trapped,' Le Bras said, adding the mother is in hospital in shock. The death follows two other children, aged two and four, found in cardiac arrest in a car on Monday. Paris hit a June record of 40.9C on Wednesday, the first time in 150 years it surpassed 40C. Mayor Emmanuel Gregoire urged Parisians to slow down as the heatwave disrupted power supplies and shut schools. Prime minister Sebastien Lecornu activated the highest health alert, meaning non-urgent operations could be cancelled. French authorities warn the heatwave may return in early July, with minister Monique Barbut saying there is a 'strong probability' of extreme heat until July 14.
