Alejandro Garnacho has signed for Aston Villa on a season-long loan from Chelsea, with a conditional obligation to make the move permanent next summer – a deal that follows the winger being told he was not guaranteed regular playing time under new Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso.
The 22-year-old Argentine, who joined Chelsea from Manchester United for £40m last September, will remain at Villa Park until the end of the 2026-27 season and has already agreed a four-year contract. The obligation to buy is expected to be triggered if conditions such as a set number of appearances are met, with Chelsea believing the terms are easily reachable and that they will achieve their original £43m valuation.

Garnacho scored eight goals and registered four assists in 43 appearances for Chelsea last season but struggled to impress. He did not report for pre-season duty at Stamford Bridge after it was agreed he would stay away while a departure was finalised. He was named in Argentina’s initial 55-man selection for the World Cup but missed out on the final squad.
His arrival at Villa Park comes just days after Villa sold Morgan Rogers to Chelsea for a club-record £117m – a deal that continues a busy transfer corridor between the two clubs. Villa have also sold Youri Tielemans, Donyell Malen, Enzo Barrenechea and Lewis Dobbin this summer, bringing total player sales to nearly £200m. The club is under Uefa financial scrutiny, having received a partially suspended £19.4m fine for a “significant breach” of squad-cost rules, with £12.9m suspended depending on improvement.
Garnacho becomes Villa’s fourth signing of the window, following Johan Manzambi, Joao Gomes and Modou Keba Cisse. Villa head coach Unai Emery said: “We are delighted with Alejandro. He is so talented, young and he showed us his wish to help our project. We are really happy.”
Should the move become permanent, Manchester United, who inserted a 10% sell-on clause when selling Garnacho to Chelsea, will receive a cut of the fee.
